In a solo, self-initiated project, André Masters has created this stunning collection of exotic animal casts, all of which are endangered or vulnerable species. The ‘Endangered Species Collection’ was created over a number of years at two British zoological parks during annual veterinary checkups and no animals were harmed or injured during the moulding process. The casts immediately convey the skin texture and sheer size of these magnificent rare animals, many of which are far too dangerous to touch in reality; bringing their exquisite tactile beauty to a sighted or partially sighted audience as well as serious collectors. Available for sale to the public for the very first time, the collection was launched at the 'Exhibition of the Tiger' in support of the WWF in November 2010 at The Joanna May Studio Gallery in Malborough, Wiltshire.
Considered a ‘vulnerable species’ by the IUCN in 2008, the Clouded Leopard is one of the most beautiful of the intermediate sized wild cats with fewer than 10 thousand mature adults estimated in the wild. It can be found in decreasing numbers in the Himalayan foothills across Asia. More at home in the trees the ground, it uses its incredibly long tail for balance. Declining numbers are attributed to deforestation and overzealous poaching
by fur-traders.
