In a solo, self-initiated project, André Masters has created this stunning collection of exotic animal casts, all of which are endangered or vulnerable species. The ‘Endangered Species Collection’ was created over a number of years at two British zoological parks during annual veterinary checkups and no animals were harmed or injured during the moulding process. The casts immediately convey the skin texture and sheer size of these magnificent rare animals, many of which are far too dangerous to touch in reality; bringing their exquisite tactile beauty to a sighted or partially sighted audience as well as serious collectors. Available for sale to the public for the very first time, the collection was launched at the 'Exhibition of the Tiger' in support of the WWF in November 2010 at The Joanna May Studio Gallery in Malborough, Wiltshire.
Also known as the Iranian Leopard or Caucasian Leopard, the Persian Leopard is the largest in its classification but also one of the rarest. So rare, in fact, that little is known about its behaviour or habits. It can be spotted in small numbers scattered around the Middle East and Russian hills and forests. Its decline is related to the war-torn nature
of its location destroying local habitat together with a combination of poaching and wild fires. Estimations of numbers of living adults vary, due to the shyness of this incredible animal, from the hundreds to a few thousand.
