| These nine stunningly beautiful sculptures, handmade using a combination of traditional and state-of-the-art techniques, were the crowning glory of the Foreign and Colonial Investments Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2010. The garden, created by award-winning garden-designer Thomas Hoblyn, was inspired by Voltaire's novel, 'Candide' and his obsession with the voluptuous temptress, Cunegonde. The garden won a Silver Gilt Medal, and received enormous critical acclaim, being featured by the BBC no less than six times during Chelsea Week.
Our bespoke sculptures represent the hero Candide's fantasies of the lady Cunegonde herself, forever teasingly out of reach until the very climax of the tale. We see her playing coquettishly with Candide in 'The Game' as they begin their lifelong flirtation, follow her through her sexual awakening in 'Research and Development' and finally see her confront Candide at the story's conclusion in 'Revolution' where she haughtily insists he keep his earlier promise to marry her one day. The collection took a total of nine months to make, each sculpture beginning with a life cast of the same model, followed by up to four weeks of sculpting per piece. The sculptures are made from hand-patinated nano-crystalline copper of 300 to 500 microns thick which fully encapsulates a resin core into which the finest quality marine-grade stainless steel armatures have been fixed to facilitate extremely secure mounting of the sculptures. The sculptures shown above show the original sculptures in their final patinated form (both in the garden and in the studio) and also in their raw copper state before patination to show you how a different finish can transform the sculptures and make them suited to completely different surroundings. Only one full set is available in the final patinated, electroformed copper finish as shown in the garden. The water feature, 'Narcissa', in particular, will not feature in any of the limited editions in other materials as it is a one-of-a-kind piece with no archive mould. However if you would like something similar we are happy to design you an equally beautiful piece to complete the collection in your chosen medium. Prices for the copper originals featured at the Chelsea Flower Show are detailed here. Limited editions in other materials including (but not limited to) bronze, copper-plated bronze, cold cast aluminium, cold cast copper, cold cast bronze, white onyx/resin, and black onyx/resin are also available to order. Prices available on request. |
